§ 7-32. Surfing.

  • (a)

    Safety zones which shall be posted with signs are established for bathers and to prohibit surfing or the use or riding of surfboards or kayaks in the surf adjacent to the beach, within the corporate limits of the city, which shall be as follows: One hundred (100) feet on the north and south sides of the lifeguard towers, designated by the public safety director or his designee.

    (b)

    It shall be unlawful for any person to surf or use or ride a surfboard or kayak in the surf adjacent to the beach in any such safety zone between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. during the period from Memorial Day to Labor Day of each year, each inclusive.

    (c)

    In the event of emergency or for reasons of public safety or necessity, the chief of police shall have the authority to temporarily regulate, restrict, limit or prohibit surfing or the use or riding of surfboards or kayaks in the surf adjacent to the beach within the corporate limits of the city.

    (d)

    It shall be unlawful for any person to surf or use or ride a surfboard in the surf adjacent to the beach within the corporate limits of the city at any time and at any location unless such surfboard has securely fastened to it a tether not exceeding eight (8) feet in length, the free end of which must be securely bound to either the ankle or wrist of the surfer.
